The Ruling on Saying "Peace Be Upon Him" When Mentioning ʿAlī or Other Companions

The Question
Is it permissible to say "peace be upon him" (ʿalayhis-salām) about ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and is that permissible for the rest of the Companions?
The Answer
It has no basis. The Sunnah is that there is no difference between him (ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib) and the rest of the Companions, so he is not singled out with anything. All of them, may Allah be pleased with them (raḍiya llāhu ʿanhum), and upon them be peace (ʿalayhimu s-salām).
السَّلامُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ
“Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah.”
So they have peace from us: peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. The Messenger ﷺ says:
فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَهَا فَقَدْ سَلَّمْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ فِي السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ
“For when you say it, you have sent peace upon every righteous servant in the heaven and the earth.”
