One Who Breaks the Fast Deliberately in Ramaḍān Without an Excuse

Answered by Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz

The Question

What is the ruling on a person who broke his fast in Ramaḍān without a valid excuse, being about seventeen years old, with no excuse at all? What should he do, and must he make up the days?

The Answer

Yes, he must (wājib) make up the days, and he must repent. He must repent to Allah for his negligence and for breaking his fast, and he must make up the days.

As for what is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:

مَنْ أَفْطَرَ يَوْمًا مِنْ رَمَضَانَ بِغَيْرِ عُذْرٍ، لَمْ يَقْضِ عَنْهُ صِيَامُ الدَّهْرِ وَإِنْ صَامَهُ “Whoever breaks a day of Ramaḍān without an excuse, fasting all of time will not make up for it, even if he were to fast it.”

This is a weak, unsettled hadith with the scholars; it is not authentic.

The correct view is that he must make up the day, and that suffices him along with repentance, if he makes it up before the coming Ramaḍān. But if he delays until another Ramaḍān passes, then along with making up the day he must feed a poor person (miskīn) for each day. And he must repent to Allah, a sincere and truthful repentance, with regret and a truthful resolve not to return to it. Yes.
